Orchard Assignment

Our ward is assigned to help pick Red Globe Peaches out at the
Orchard, beginning tomorrow - Wednesday (August 12th), and then again
3-4 days later. We need as many families as possible to help out with
this picking. We only have a week and half before we need to start on
the next variety. I am planning on going out Wednesday around 7:00 and
then Saturday morning around 9:00am. Won't you join me in this
wonderful service opportunity? Since we are a quorum of assignments,
can you RSVP to this invite so I can put you on my list?

Here is a link to get directions to the Orchard if you haven't been
there before:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=43.584152,-116.781085&hl=en&geocode=&view=map&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=16&sll=43.583826,-116.780226&sspn=0.007601,0.013754&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16

Also, please see this special note directly from the Orchard:

A lot of people pick and leave just one bucket of peaches in a bin.
It doubles and triples our job to get these peaches combined into bins
that we can haul in. This time of year we are out each night until
midnight anyway, bringing in the peaches from the evenings picking.
Most of the time, this happens with the people that walk ahead and
pick on the bottom of the tree down the row. We have gone out many
times to find 10 bins or so with one bucket full of peaches in each.
Please do not do this and if you see anyone do it, stop them. Those
people can do it if they want to but walk back and dump into the bin
that everyone else is picking into. This will save me and Dan a lot
of work when we already have enough to do. We will have about 500,000
pounds of peaches to pick. The wind has knocked off quite a few
peaches already.

One more helpful thing to do is please return your buckets to the bin
where you got them. They are expensive and we run over them in the
dark when they are left where ever you decide to drop them. Also drag
your ladder to the head of the row so the next one can use it. We
don't use ladders as much in peaches as apricots but still we need to
use ladders. Please safety first. Don't lean on your ladders. If
you can't reach your peach get down and move your ladder. This is the
biggest cause of most of our ladder accidents.

Once you have picked your trees the first time let them sit about 3 or
4 days and come back and pick them the second time. They should be
able to get the Red Globes in just two pickings, depending on the time
that you start picking them.

We are supplying the major amount of the peaches for the welfare
system. They will be going to three different canneries this year:
St. George cannery, Linden Utah Cannery and the Garden City Cannery.
Thank you for all that you do. It is your work that makes this
orchard a success.

After you are finished picking you are welcome to take the fruit off
the ground home. We don't want anything off the ground in the bin.
After we are finished picking the trees those who have helped us pick
can also glean the trees that are finished. We always leave peaches
here and there on the trees.

Orchard Assignment

There are still some apricots for our ward to pick. We will be going Tuesday at 6:00.

Nightgowns

From Heidi:
Okay, it's set!

Tuesday July 7th, 1:00-4:00, at the church. Primary room. Nursery provided. Gym CLOSED for refinishing floor.

Anyone that wants to come and participate in a nightgown making day. Whether you want to make one for yourself, for your daughter/granddaughter, neice, etc.. Bring your sewing machines, as well as fabric. If you don't have a machine, come anyways, we'll probably have enough to share. Stretchy knits work the best for these types of nightgown. Also bring a T-shirt that fits, and you'll cut a pattern off of it. (Unless of course you have pattern for something else you want to do). If the fabric is 60 inches wide, you will probably need your length (from the back of your neck to however long you want it) unlesss you want it really full, then twice the length. The fabric is 45 inches wide, then you will probably need twice your length. A really easy way to finish these nightgowns off is to put lace around the bottom as well as the sleeve. You'll need probably 3-4 yards of lace to do this. (or I can show you how to do a little flutter sleeve that's pretty easy too). If you have any questions, leave a comment here.

Church Orchard

Brother Harding is hoping to get two volunteers each day next week to pick some of the apricots at the Church Orchard (in the new area). Call for more info. Please RSVP ASAP as he is out of town all next week.

Back to School with Deseret Industries

The two weeks of July 20th through August 15th we are doing something special for those in need. Deseret Industries is having Back to School Nights and is requesting donations. We do ask that the items be new or like new. We need to have these items to DI no later than July 19th.

During the Back to School Nights, the Training Room at the Nampa DI will be set up for those needing school supplies. The priority for those who need these supplies will be given to Bishop's Orders first. Once Back to School Nights have come to an end, any donations left over will then be placed out on the sales floor for the public to purchase at lower than retail price.

We appreciate any help that can be given especially at this time of hardship for so many. Some of the items we need are;

Crayons (all types), Colored Pencils, Colored Markers, No. 2 Pencils and Pencil Sharpeners.

Pens (Black, Blue and Red), Highlighters and Dry Erase Markers

Paper: Computer/Loose Leaf Paper (Regular and College), 3 x 5 Cards, Spiral Notebooks and Composition Books

Erasers (Large Pink and Pencil Top), Rulers, Compasses and Protractors

Glue Sticks, Elmer's Glue and Scissors (Blunt)

Ziploc Baggies (quart and gallon sizes), Boxes of Kleenex and Hand Sanitizers, Lunch Boxes or Reusable Sacks

2 Sided Pocket Folders, Binders (1", 2", and 3"), Sheet Protectors and Book Covers

Pencil Boxes and Pouches, Jump Drives and Backpacks

Jam!

Thursday night at 7 at Karen Perren's house (map) we will be learning how to make jam, freezer and cooked. There will be fresh baked bread with which to sample said jam. How can you stay away? Bring a small container with you if you would like to take some home. We will have a few containers there if needed.

Cub Scout Day Camp Request

Hello to all you fellow scouters,

I'm in need of a bunch of 2 liter pop bottles, empty and cleaned out.

We will be using about 100 of them at camp.  Would all of you start collecting them, please?  Bring them to Daycamp on June 15th at Lake Lowell from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.  I would really appreciate your help with these items.  My family can't possibly drink that much pop.  I know they would like to try...

Thank you so much,
Ivy Hunt
